Details:
William Henry Bickersteth, entered in the College Calendar as Henry Bickersteth, was born in 1813 and became distinguished both as a Physician and as Surgeon to the Somerset Hospital, Cape Town. He died at Cape Town on Aug 6th, 1862, and in the Medical Circular (1865, NS. xxvi, 447) there appeared the description of a memorial tablet placed in the vestibule of the hospital by his medical colleagues. The inscription paid tribute to his talents and eminence as a physician; his fame had spread beyond the confines of the Colony, and by his death the public had sustained a grievous loss. The inscription runs:- IN MEMORIAM HENRICI BICKERSTETH, MD, FRCS CHIRURGI NOSOCOMII SOMERSET HUNC LAPIDEM SOCII ILLIUS MEDICI STATUUNT, FAMAM EJUS CELEBREM DOTESQUE INSIGNES, ADMIRANTES ET COLLAUDANTES MORS EJUS ET MEDICÆ ARTI ET POPULO, MAGNO DAMNO FUIT E VITA EXCESSIT DIE VI AUGUSTI MDCCCLXII ÆT. 49
