Matthew Robert Wakelin Utting was a registrar in orthopaedic surgery in the Bristol area. He studied medicine at Manchester University, gaining a BSc in anatomy with first class honours in 1994 and his MB ChB in 1997.
He held junior posts in Lancashire, Norfolk and the south west, and then joined the Bristol orthopaedic registrar training programme. In 2008 he began a one year fellowship in complex joint replacement surgery in Perth, Western Australia.
He wrote a number of academic papers and presentations, and received several prizes and awards, including the president's medal at the May 2008 meeting of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee.
Matthew Utting died in Western Australia on 15 August 2008. He was 35. He was survived by his wife Sarah and two daughters, Madeline and Isabel.
