Details:
The son of Edmund Joseph Furner (qv), of Brighton, and Arabella, eldest daughter of John Lawrence, senr (qv). He was educated at St Bartholomew's Hospital, where his career was one of distinction; he was Senior Scholar (1871), Foster and Treasurer's Prizeman (1869-1870), House Surgeon, House Physician, Demonstrator of Anatomy and of Operative Surgery. He was also Prosector at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1873. Succeeding to his father's practice in Brighton in 1876, he was appointed Assistant Surgeon and then Surgeon to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. He was also Surgeon to the Blind Asylum and to the 1st Sussex Rifle Volunteers. He practised first at 35 Great Ormond Street, WC, and, on going to Brighton, at 2 Brunswick Place, whence he moved to Arundel House, 22 The Drive, Hove, and latterly to 13 Brunswick Square. During the Great War (1914-1919) he was Medical Officer and Administrator of the Auxiliary Hospital in Third Avenue, Hove, and received the OBE in recognition of his services. Before his retirement Furner was one of the leading surgeons in Brighton and Hove. The name had been a household word in the joint towns for a great number of years, and he was held in the highest esteem and respect by all his colleagues. He was an ex-President of the Brighton and Sussex Medico-Chirurgical Society. He died at his residence in Hove, after a long illness, on October 19th, 1920.
