Details:
After qualifying went to Macclesfield as House Surgeon to the Dispensary (afterwards the Infirmary), and by his kindliness and uniform attention to his duties soon won a high position and was able, on settling in local practice, to command a very respectable circle of patients. He is described as being rarely at fault in his diagnosis and as self-possessed and dexterous in operations. After practising for half a century he went into retirement about two miles from the town, and was presented by 'a select company' of local gentlemen with a sum of money, subscribed for by patients and friends, and an address, 'superbly engrossed on vellum'. Some time before his death he handed over to the Governors of the Infirmary a fine collection of anatomical preparations, both natural and morbid, which, it was hoped, would form the nucleus of a good museum. He was at the time Senior Surgeon of the town and Consulting Surgeon at the Infirmary. He died on June 19th, 1877, and was buried in his own vault at Gawsworth Church.
