Details:
Born at Bampton, and received his professional training at St Bartholomew's Hospital, where he was House Surgeon. He settled at Winchester in 1860 as House Surgeon to the Hants County Hospital. Later he became Surgeon, and finally Consulting Surgeon, to this institution, as well as Visiting Surgeon under the Contagious Diseases Acts. He was appointed a member of the Local Board of Health. He was elected Medical Officer of Health on July 24th, 1873, and continued to hold that post for a period of thirty-two years. He was also Public Vaccinator and Surgeon to the Carlisle Memorial Refuge for Female Convicts, Certifying Surgeon, etc, and was at one time President of the Southern Branch of the British Medical Association and latterly Medical Superintendent of the Victoria Hospital for Infectious Diseases. He resided always at Northgate House, where he died on December 18th, 1905, leaving a widow and large family.
