Details:
One of the three sons of John Taunton (1769-1821), anatomist and surgeon, of Hatton Garden, who founded, and was first Surgeon of, the City of London Truss Society. An account of him is in the *Dictionary of National Biography*. John Colley Taunton succeeded his father as Surgeon to the Truss Society and served that institution from 1823-1856. He was also Surgeon to the City Dispensary. Apparently neither he nor his father wrote much, but they did great service in treating by trusses patients suffering from hernia, the making and adjusting of which they superintended themselves instead of leaving it to instrument-makers. A reproduction of Taunton's portrait hangs in the Board Room of the City of London Truss Society at 35 Finsbury Square, EC. He died at his house, 48 Hatton Garden, on Jan 22nd, 1858. His son, W K Taunton, was interested all his life in the Truss Society, for which he was Secretary from 1906 to the time of his death on January 4th, 1927.
