Details:
Jadu Moni Bora was a vascular surgeon at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. He was born on 1 April 1943 in Assam, India, the youngest child of Kumud Ram Bora, a practising lawyer, and his wife, Nalini Bora née Barna, a homemaker of a large family. Academically, by his own admission, he was a late developer, however, he left Cotton College in Assam in the first division and gained a place at Assam Medical College, where he was awarded a merit scholarship. It was here his future career path was laid down as, after discovering anatomy, he knew he wished to specialise in surgery. His initial surgical and training posts were held in Scotland, first at Greenock Royal Infirmary in 1967 and then at Dunoon General Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Bora's first post south of the border was at Victoria Hospital, Blackpool. It was during this time, in 1978, that he gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He then held surgical posts at Scartho Road Hospital, Grimsby (from 1979 to 1983) and at Bassetlaw Hospital, Worksop (from 1983 to 1987). In 1988 Bora was appointed to Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, as a general surgical registrar and then as a staff grade surgeon with a particular interest in vascular surgery. This also served as a teaching appointment within the university hospital, and Bora was particularly fond of teaching medical students. He remained in this post until a serious illness caused his early retirement in 2003. He went on to overcome this and make a full recovery - a testament to his strength and character. In retirement he was a keen gardener and spent many hours in the summer tending to his home-grown produce. He passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep on 30 December 2011 at the age of 68. He was survived by his wife Bani Bora née Chowdhury, whom he married in 1974, and their two sons Robin and Arun Bora.
