He also served as house surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and became resident surgical officer and subsequently clinical surgical assistant at the Connaught Hospital, Walthamstow. He took the Edinburgh and the English Fellowships in 1938. After the outbreak of war in 1939 he became resident surgeon in the emergency medical service hospital at Black Notley, near Braintree, Essex. In November 1942 he sailed for South Africa, intending to join the South African Army Medical Corps, but the ship was lost with all passengers. Blusger played centre three-quarter in the St Bartholomew's Hospital rugby football XV, and was also a keen lawn-tennis player and fond of riding.
