Details:
Born in 1918 daughter of Dr Mary Poonen-Lukose MB London, surgeon-general to the Government of Travancore, she was educated at Madras University and, like her mother, at the London School of Medicine for Women in 1938. Returning to India in 1947 she was at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi until 1949 when she came back to England, living in Canterbury Hall, London with the object of obtaining her Fellowship which she did in 1951. This accomplished, she was appointed assistant Professor of Surgery at Lady Hardinge College, but in 1954 while staying with her mother in Travancore she contracted rheumatic fever. She was accidentally killed under tragic circumstances while attempting to free a relation whose hair had become entangled in an electric fan on 26 December 1954. Grace Lukose combined the best qualities of East and West being sincere, forthright and courageous. Her temperament was gay, loyal and without any trace of the self consciousness.
