While at the latter he gained the Jeafferson exhibition and Foster prize and while still a student volunteered for service with the Greek forces during the Balkan War of 1912-13 for which work he was awarded the Order of the Redeemer. After qualifying in 1914 he joined the RAMC as a Captain and served at Gallipoli, in France and in Italy. Returning to St Bartholomew's he held appointments as senior house physician and house surgeon during 1919 and 1920, and in 1921 he was awarded a first-class certificate as a prosector in anatomy at the College. He then became resident surgical officer at Ancoats Hospital, Manchester after which he settled first in Newquay and then in Penzance for the ensuing thirty-five years, becoming surgeon to the West Cornwall Hospital until his retirement in 1958. He also acted as Admiralty Agent, referee under the Workmen's Compensation Act, and treasurer of the West Cornwall Medical Society. A complete general practitioner surgeon, his leisure was occupied by cabinet and clock making, and as a pianist. He died on 29 June 1961 in the West Cornwall Hospital aged 72 survived by his wife and daughter.
