Born on 30 January 1906 he was educated in Liverpool, and at Liverpool University he graduated with honours in his final examination and was awarded the BMA prize as a final year student. He held a number of resident posts at the Royal Infirmary after qualification and was awarded the Samuels Memorial Scholarship in Surgery in 1931. He acted as senior surgical registrar and tutor and radium registrar before being appointed to the consultant staff of the Royal Infirmary as assistant surgeon. His other appointments were those of surgeon to the Birkenhead General Hospital, to the Birkenhead and Wirral Children's Hospital and to Clatterbridge Hospital.

For the last ten years of his life he was assistant to Professor C Wells on the surgical unit at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary, being an assistant lecturer in surgery for the University.

A modest man of great character and courage he remained at work in spite of increasing ill health and had been operating in the morning on the day of his death.

He died on 22 September 1956 aged 50 survived by his wife and three children.
