He was born in 1910 and graduated from Calcutta University in 1935. After working for a year at the Carmichael Medical College Hospital he went to England and obtained Fellowships from England and Edinburgh. On returning to India Das joined the University of Calcutta as a resident surgeon and worked there for two years. He was then appointed consultant surgeon and worked in a group of hospitals from 1943 to 1949. During 1949-51 he was attached as visiting surgeon to the Lake Medical College Hospital, and 1952-59 he worked at the Chitteranjan Cancer Hospital in the capacity of visiting surgeon. In the R G Kar Medical College, associated with this hospital, he was an Associate Professor of Surgery 1952-63 then becoming Professor of Surgery, and in 1967 he was appointed the director of the Department of Surgery, a post which he held until his death in 1968. Das was an outstanding teacher and a good surgeon; he wrote a number of surgical text books of which *Clinical methods in surgery* is the best. His premature death at the height of a successful surgical career was a great loss to the surgical profession in India. He died quite suddenly at his home, Gulnostagar Lane, Calcutta on 12 January 1968.
