Details:
David Brockway Rogers was a consultant general surgeon at Auckland Hospital, New Zealand. He was born in Auckland on 30 September 1922, the son of Lionel Brockway Rogers and Whittier Rogers née McLeod. He attended Auckland Grammar School and then went to Auckland University. After a year, once he had passed an intermediate entry exam, he transferred to the medical school at the University of Otago in Dunedin. He gained his MB ChB in 1946 and was subsequently a resident medical officer at Auckland Hospital. He then decided to travel by ship to England to pursue surgical training. He worked at the Westminster and other London hospitals, and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1951. In 1953 he returned to New Zealand, again by ship, and was appointed to a full-time surgical post at Auckland Hospital. Five years later, he was appointed as a visiting consultant general surgeon and commenced a successful private surgical practice in Auckland. His initial surgical colleague was Douglas Guthrie; their team was much sought after as a teaching unit. David took a special interest in head and neck surgery of the thyroid and the parotid. He was a respected colleague and a gifted surgical teacher. He took a prominent role in establishing a postgraduate surgical training programme in Auckland, and was a member of the council of examiners of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. When the old 1870s Auckland Hospital main block was demolished in 1966, his ward was transferred to a new 700-bed modern Auckland Hospital, where he operated and taught until his retirement in 1987. He had a close friendship with the Auckland surgeon Jim Church. Both surgeons had gone to England to do their training and gain their fellowship about the same time. That friendship remained strong throughout his career. David and Jim were longstanding and competitive members of the Royal Auckland Golf Club. David was also a keen rugby supporter at Eden Park and enjoyed yachting on the Auckland gulf. Other leisure activities included trout fishing, shooting and fly tying (making artificial flies to catch fish). He was also president of the Auckland Rotary Club in 1990. In 1946 David married Shirley Brown, a physiotherapist from Auckland. Their first child, Angus, was born in 1948. Later Jennifer, Sarah and Michael were born. David Brockway Rogers died in Auckland on 17 July 2014, aged 91.
