Details:
Born on the 4 August 1897 at Cardiff, the only son of David Jones, works manager for Guest, Keen and Nettlefold, he was educated at Cardiff High School and the University of South Wales, obtaining a BSc in 1919. For his medical education he attended the Welsh National School of Medicine, qualifying with the Conjoint Diploma in 1921. Proceeding to the Westminster Hospital in London, he occupied a series of appointments, namely casualty officer, house surgeon, house physician and senior resident medical officer. During this period he graduated with the qualifying examinations of the University of Wales and of London University. He then did postgraduate work under the Welsh National Memorial Association (Tuberculosis) until his appointment in 1926 as assistant surgical registrar at the Westminster, becoming surgical registrar in 1927. This last post he held for three years, during which time he was admitted to the Fellowship in 1929 and worked in particular under Ernest Rock Carling, acquiring special experience in radiotherapy. In 1930 he was appointed as assistant surgeon to the Cardiff Royal Infirmary. He was soon in great demand and covering a wide area of country as a consultant as a result of which his health broke down in 1936 when he was admitted to Midhurst Hospital under the care of Tudor Edwards. After two years he made a complete recovery and returned to busy active surgical life. For the College he became a member of the Court of Examiners in 1955 and served his full terms. Ioan-Jones wrote little, but was recognised in Cardiff as an outstanding surgeon, a good teacher and a quiet man of great integrity. He married in 1931 and died on 27 June 1967, survived by his wife and daughter.
