Details:
Narasinganallore S Narasimhan was born on 20 April 1893 in the province of Madras, and although he decided early he wanted to be a doctor he could not afford a university course so took the subassistant surgeon's course at the Prince of Wales Medical School, gaining its licence in 1913. During the first world war he worked as an assistant in a naval hospital in Bombay, and spent his spare time studying anatomy, pathology and surgery at the Bombay Medical College. After the war he returned to Madras province and worked in rural hospitals as sub-assistant surgeon, but was fortunate in that a visiting surgeon-general recognized his unusual ability and transferred him to the Royapuram Medical School at Madras as an assistant lecturer in surgery. In 1927 he was granted leave to come to England where he passed the Conjoint Examination in 1928, and worked in various hospitals. He was particularly impressed by Hey Groves's teaching of orthopaedics which he adopted as his own specialty. During this visit he obtained the FRCSI, and during a second one he passed the English Fellowship in 1936. On his return to India after the first of these visits he became established as a teacher of surgery in the Madras Medical College where he organized an orthopaedic department, and during the second world war he was appointed Professor of Operative Surgery. As a surgeon he was renowned for his wisdom and skill, and his teaching was so much appreciated that he continued to teach and examine even after his retirement in 1948. The professional reputation of Professor Narasimhan was recognized by his election as President of the Association of Surgeons of India, and because of his sterling character and unassuming gentleness his death on 8 November 1972 at the age of 80 was mourned by the profession throughout India. He was survived by his wife and three daughters, one of whom is a well-known doctor.
