Details:
Henry Clarence Wardleworth Nuttall was born on 22 June 1886 and qualified at Liverpool University with the Conjoint Diploma in 1910. After junior hospital appointments in Liverpool he was Thelwall Thomas Fellow in surgical pathology, then Holt Fellow in pathology, and later Robert Gee Fellow in anatomy. He passed the DPH in 1912. In the first world war he served with the RNVR in the Atlantic Patrol, and also in German South West Africa and the Dardanelles. In 1917 he became deputy medical transport officer to the Grand Fleet, and was demobilized in 1919. Nuttall then resumed the career which had been interrupted by the war, and in 1920 obtained the FRCS of Edinburgh, and in 1921 of England. In 1922 he was appointed consultant surgeon to the Liverpool Royal Southern Hospital, where he worked till 1925 when he transferred to the Liverpool Royal Infirmary, and was there till he retired in 1946 at the age of 60. He had subsidiary appointments to Booth Borough, Mill Road, Liverpool, and Wrexham War Memorial Hospitals. In the University he was a lecturer and clinical sub-dean, and became an external examiner in the University of London. After his retirement he moved in 1948 to Halesworth in Suffolk and became interested in fruit growing, and also took part in the life of the local community first on the urban district council, and then as a County Councillor for East Suffolk from 1952 to 57. When arthritis began to limit his activities he moved first to Cambridge and later to Ruislip in Middlesex where he ended his days. Nuttall was a very keen member of his hospital staff and set a good example to his juniors by his careful attention to all emergencies admitted under his care. But he also spared time to enjoy good company, playing tennis, dancing and bridge, and he earned the gratitude of many of his juniors for the kind hospitality of his home. He died at the age of 85 at his home at Ruislip on 19 May 1972, and was survived by his wife and two sons.
