Kenneth Peter Somerville Caldwell was a consultant surgeon in Exeter. He was born in Mussoorie, India, on 1 October 1914, the son of Kenneth Somerville Caldwell, a professor of chemistry, and Gertrude Elizabeth Caldwell née Sailman. He was educated at Stoneygate School, Leicester, and then Charterhouse, and was an exhibitioner at Peterhouse, Cambridge University. Whilst at Cambridge he gained a blue at football. He went on to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington for his clinical studies. Prior to his consultant appointment he was a house surgeon at St Mary's Hospital and a registrar at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. He served in the RAMC as a major and surgical specialist. He was also a consultant for the Ministry of Social Security. He was a Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1966. He was the first president of the International Continence Society. Outside medicine, he was interested in sailing. He was a member of the Hawks' and Corinthian clubs. In 1941 he married a Miss Dunbar. They had two sons and two daughters, one of whom qualified at St Mary's Hospital.
