John Alan William McKelvey was a consultant ophthalmologist for the Cornwall Hospitals Trust. He was born in 1932 into a farming family in Northern Ireland. He studied medicine at Queen's University, Belfast, qualifying in 1955. He held junior hospital posts at Belfast City Hospital, and in 1957 moved to Derby, where he became a general practitioner at the Station Road practice. After nine years, he decided to retrain as an ophthalmologist, and held training posts in Sheffield and Manchester, before becoming a registrar and then a senior registrar at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. In 1973 he was appointed as a consultant ophthalmologist to the Cornwall Hospitals Group. He became head of the eye department, first at City Hospital, Truro, and then at Falmouth Hospital. He retired in 1999. He was chairman of the Cornwall Clinical Society and the South West Ophthalmological Society. John Alan William McKelvey died on 17 August 2014. He was survived by his widow, Ruth, their two sons, daughter and six grandchildren.
