Details:
Maurice James Bennett-Jones was born in Liverpool on 30 November 1906, his father was William James Bennett-Jones, consultant anaesthetist to Liverpool Royal Infirmary and his mother was Dr Daly - a Doctor of Medicine and a JP. He was educated at Rossall School, Fleetwood, and Liverpool University where he was awarded the Gee Fellowship in anatomy 1930-1931 and distinction in the pharmacology examination. Following qualification in 1929 he was house surgeon and house physician in Liverpool Royal Infirmary and house surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London. He derived valuable experience from Sir Robert Kelly, H F Woolfenden, T Twistington Higgins, Denis Browne, Sir Clifford Naunton-Morgan and Cecil Joll. He obtained the FRCS in 1933 and held appointments at the Liverpool Royal South, St Helens and Bootle Hospitals. Bennett-Jones served as a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1946 to 1948. He was a member of the Council and Honorary Secretary for Ordinary Meetings of the Liverpool Medical Institution. He married the daughter of R B Macfie FRCS Ed in 1938 and they had one son and two daughters. In his earlier years he enjoyed skiing and tennis, later he was interested in travel associated with archaeology and gardening. He died on 20 July 1980 at Westside Nursing Home, Purley.
