Details:
Howard Bullock combined a distinguished academic career with great prowess on the sports field. At school he had been an all-round athlete but when he went to Sydney University he decided to concentrate on football and, as one of his friends commented 'threw himself into this with the enthusiasm and energy with which he tackled his work'. He came to England and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford from 1910 to 1912. During these years he passed the Conjoint Diploma and the Fellowship of the College. He also held appointments at St Peter's Hospital for Stone and the Evelina Hospital for Sick Children in London. In the first world war he served as honorary surgeon to the Red Cross Society. Returning to Australia he served Sydney Hospital as an honorary surgeon for many years and became postgraduate lecturer in surgery and examiner in surgery for Sydney University. During the second world war he served as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the AMC. Bullock was a man of great stamina and superb surgical technique. He was always ready for work and his services were frequently in demand for urgent surgery, a colleague remembers seeing 'the whole of one side of a surgical ward who had been urgently operated on by him'. He died in 1979.
