Details:
Geoffrey Newman-Morris followed his father as a surgeon and as a distinguished Chairman of the Australian Red Cross Society. While the father, John, was surgeon at St Vincent's, Geoffrey, the son, was surgeon at Prince Henry's Hospital, Melbourne. Born 14 May 1909 in Violet Town, Victoria, Geoffrey was educated at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, Trinity College Medical School and the University of Melbourne, gaining a scholarship in pathology and a hockey blue. He served the Royal Melbourne Hospital from 1933 to 1946 as resident medical officer and associate surgeon and Prince Henry's Hospital 1946 until 1967 as honorary surgeon, thereafter as consulting surgeon. During the second world war he served in the RAAMC (1940-1946) as Lieutenant-Colonel in the Middle East and in New Guinea, being mentioned in despatches. His service as a surgeon of clinical ability and compassion was matched by his distinguished national and international service to the Red Cross, becoming chairman of the Standing Commission. In 1979 he received the highest honour of the Red Cross - the Henri Durant Medal. He also received the Gold Medal of the Australian Medical Association after services extending from 1953 to 1973, being Chairman of Assembly, 1967-72. He was knighted in 1969. Constantly guided by the Christian ethic he was churchwarden in his local church at Toorak for many years. His main hobbies were bowls and sea fishing. In 1945 he married Sheila Brown. They had two sons, Andrew and John and a daughter Eleanor, the eldest son continuing the family medical tradition. He died on 20 October 1981, aged 72 years.
