Jitendra Lal Podder qualified MB BS Calcutta in 1954 and obtained the Fellowship in 1966. He died in London on 19 February 1984, survived by a son and daughter.

Jitendra Lal Podder was an orthopaedic surgeon. He was born in Sylhet, then part of India, on 1 July 1929, the son of Sarala and Joygobindo Podder. He studied medicine in Calcutta and qualified in 1954.

He was a commissioned officer in the Indian Army, serving as a captain in the Medical Corps, before leaving for England in 1959.

He obtained his FRCS in 1966 and became a locum consultant orthopaedic surgeon, working at many hospitals around the UK, including North Ayrshire District General Hospital and in Worksop.

He died in London on 19 February 1984, aged 54. He was survived by his widow, Pushpa Lata, who was his strength and inspiration, encouraging him to obtain his fellowship, his son and daughter (an advocate). His nephew, Prakash Saha, who he was fond of, followed him into medicine and also obtained his FRCS.

Jitendra Lal Podder will always be remembered by his loving family, friends and colleagues for his dignity, compassion and love of life.
