Norman Wynne Roberts, the second son of Dr Thomas Roberts, a general practitioner and later a medical officer of health, and of Elizabeth Roberts (née Thomas), was born at Caernarvon, North Wales, on 2 July 1907. He was educated at Grove Park Grammar School, Wrexham, and at Liverpool University. After graduation he was house surgeon and casualty officer at the Liverool Royal Infirmary and later orthopaedic registrar to Reginald Watson-Jones. The date of his appointment as assistant orthopaedic surgeon to the Liverpool Royal Infirmary is not recorded but he was ultimately senior orthopaedic surgeon there. He trained many of the younger orthopaedic fraternity in Liverpool and was always well spoken of by his trainees. In 1965 he was Robert Jones lecturer of the British Orthopaedic Association. Outside his professional life he was keen on golf and gardening. In 1938 he married Patricia Frank; they had three daughters and two sons, the elder son being a doctor. When he died at his home in Hoylake on 8 September 1988, aged 81 years, he was survived by his wife and five children.
