He had a sister, Rosemary, and two brothers, Ian and Graeme. He was educated at Camberwell Grammar School in Melbourne and Scotch College (from 1946 to 1953). He went on to study medicine at the University of Melbourne, qualifying in 1961. He was an intern at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and then went to the UK, where he was a senior house officer and registrar at the Royal Eye Hospital in London, and subsequently a registrar at the Croydon Eye Unit.
