Details:
John Malcolm Barnes was a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in Bangor. He was born in Glasgow on 24 March 1943. His father, Roland Barnes (qv), was the first Professor of orthopaedics in Glasgow, who had trained under Sir Harry Platt at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. His mother Mary Mills née Buckley was a nurse at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. He was educated at Fettes and the Middlesex Hospital. After junior appointments he did the training rotation at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and spent some time in South Africa. In 1983 he was appointed as consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Gwynedd Hospital, Bangor. His special interest was the surgery of rheumatology, especially the replacement of the elbow and shoulder. His marriage to his first wife, Diana, was dissolved: they had two sons, Simon and Graham, the elder of whom (Simon) became a surgeon. He later married his second wife, Margaret. He was interested in squash, golf and walking, including trekking in the Alps, Himalayas and the Karakorums. He was proud of his showpiece garden and he enjoyed carving in wood and stone. He died on Christmas Day, 1997, of carcinoma of the thyroid.
