Enid Rockstro was born on 17 December 1902 in Halesowen, Worcestershire, the daughter of Frank Braine Rockstro, a general practitioner, whose father was a leading flautist and musician of his time, and whose uncle was the well known musician, Sir William Rockstro. Her mother, Elaine Mary, née Ashby, was the daughter of a businessman, the founder of Morris Ashby Ltd of London and of Hooper and Ashby Ltd of Southampton. Enid was educated at Cheltenham Ladies' College and University College London Medical Faculty, winning a chemistry prize before completing her education at University College Hospital Medical School, where she was house surgeon to Hamilton Bailey and W B Gabriel. After early appointments at the Royal Northern Hospital and the South London Hospital for Women, she became consultant surgeon at the New Sussex Hospital for Women, Brighton, and the Cuckfield Hospital. Miss Rockstro never married but adopted two sons, the younger of whom qualified MRCS and LRCP and MB BS London in 1969. She retired to Milford-on-Sea and died on 2 September 1996.
