Vijay Chand Berdia was a general surgeon in North Carolina, USA. He was born in Gotegaon, Madhya Pradesh, India on 23 September 1935, the son of Seth Nandram Beria, a landlord and grain merchant, and Paras Bai Beria née Oswal. He was educated at the Municipal High School, Gotegaon, Maharashtra High School, Jabalpur and Robertson College, also in Jabalpur, and went on to study medicine at Nagpur Medical College, Nagpur, Maharashtra. He qualified in 1959. He went to the UK for surgical training, and worked at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Preston Royal Hospital and Wigan’s Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. He was a surgical specialist in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh and a civil surgeon in Mandsaur, also in Madhya Pradesh. He later emigrated to the United States and was a surgeon in North Carolina. He eventually moved to Maryland. Outside medicine, he was interested in golf, tennis, yoga and meditation. In 1959, he married Asha Saraf. They had two sons, Ajay, who became a neurologist, and Sunjay, a hand surgeon, a daughter, Abha, and eight grandchildren. Vijay Chand Berdia died on 10 May 2012. He was 76.
