Details:
Philip Edward Huddy was a consultant surgeon in Swindon, Cirencester and Marlborough. Born in London on 27 January 1927, he was the second of the three sons of George Philip Buckingham Huddy. His father was surgeon to the Dudley Road Hospital in Birmingham until he retired aged 37 due to severe rheumatoid arthritis and his mother Margaret née Corner was a pioneer female medical student who passed the conjoint examination and became a GP. Educated at Chigwell House School in Edgebaston, Birmingham and at Epsom College from 1939 to 1944, he studied medicine at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. In the course of various house jobs at hospitals in London he was influenced by Clark Kennedy, Clive Butler, John Eric Richardson and Sir Alan Guyett Parks. At the London Hospital he was senior registrar to another mentor, Herman Taylor. He passed the fellowship of the college in 1956 and was appointed consultant surgeon to the Swindon, Cirencester and Marlborough hospitals, also becoming a surgical tutor for the college in that area. He married Sheila Elizabeth Lyle Donald on 11 August 1951 and they had two sons and two daughters. One son qualified as a surgeon and passed the fellowship, another became a consultant anaesthetist and the daughters worked in the city. Outside medicine he enjoyed fishing, game shooting and golf and was, at one time, president of the Old Epsomian Golf Society. He died in February 2007 aged 80.
