Details:
Anil Kumar Roy was a general surgeon at Humboldt District Hospital, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was born in Jhargram, West Bengal, India on 3 August 1936, the second youngest of eight children. His father, Hari Pada Roy, was a civil servant; his mother, Sabitri Roy née Sarkar, was a house wife. He attended Vidyasagar High School, Ghatal, West Bengal and Bankura Christian College, Bankura, West Bengal. He then studied medicine at Calcutta Medical College. He qualified in 1959. He trained in surgery in Edinburgh and practised surgery in the UK over the next ten years. In 1970, he emigrated to Canada and settled in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, where he worked for 27 years. He retired to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and then Guelph, Ontario. Outside medicine he enjoyed travel, golf, cricket, field hockey, soccer, bird watching and bridge. In September 1965, he married Annette, whom he had met at Mexborough Hospital in South Yorkshire. They had a daughter, Nicola Jayne, two sons, Julian Kumar and Matthew, and five grandchildren, Canute, Nathaniel, Leif, Aanika and Jaya. Predeceased by his wife, whom he cared for during her year-long battle with cancer, he died on 26 July 2010, aged 73.
