Sister Catherine Mary Rosarii Lawler was a general surgeon who worked in mission hospitals in Nigeria and Kenya. Born on 18 April 1928 in County Wexford, she was the daughter of John Lawler a primary school teacher and his wife Nora. She studied medicine at the National University of Ireland and St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin. After house jobs at the Old Church Hospital in Romford from 1957 to 1958 working under William Douglas Park, she moved to Whipps Cross Hospital in Essex. Further house appointments were at Leicester Royal Infirmary with John Felix Bolton Carter and at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street working with David James Waterston, the distinguished paediatric surgeon. After passing the fellowship of the college in 1964 she went to Nigeria and commenced work as a missionary sister. After three years she moved to Kenya and spent a year there before returning to Nigeria for another ten years. A member of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary she may have retired to their convent in Dublin. She died on 29 March 2017 aged 88.
