Details:
John Anthony Fleming was a consultant general surgeon at the West Middlesex Hospital, Isleworth. He was born in Surbiton, Surrey on 22 October 1928, the second son of Robert Hood Fleming, a surgeon, and Margaret Fleming née Williams. His older brother Peter became a cardiologist. Fleming attended Arundel House School in Surbiton and then King’s College School and went on to study medicine at Middlesex Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1952.
He held house posts at the Middlesex Hospital and was a surgical registrar there and at the Central Middlesex Hospital. He was subsequently appointed as a consultant surgeon at the West Middlesex Hospital and as an honorary senior lecturer at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School.
In 1953, he married Valerie Yates. They had three sons and a daughter, 13 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Fleming died on 9 October 2017 at the age of 88.
