Marion Bartlett was a missionary surgeon in Tanzania, Africa. She was born on 2 October 1921 in Sevenoaks, Kent and was the daughter of Alfred Arthur Phillips, an Anglican priest. Her mother, Josephine Amy née Clouting, was the daughter of a general practitioner. Both her parents served as missionaries with the Church Mission Society in China. Educated at Thorpe House School in Norwich, Norfolk and St Michael’s School in Limpsfield, Surrey, she then trained in medicine at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in London. After qualifying MB, BS in 1944, she did house jobs initially at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and then at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Her final post in the UK was as resident medical officer at the King Edward VII Hospital in Windsor. She passed the fellowship of the college in 1948 and moved to Tanganyika with the Universities Mission to Central Africa (UMCA) the following year. In the forty years that she spent there she worked hard to maintain surgical standards and to promote the UMCA tradition of prioritising training for Africans. At various times she was medical officer in charge of the Minaki, Lulindi, and Magila Hospitals. Her crowning achievement was the founding of the 300 bed Teule Muheza Hospital in Muheza, Tanzania. She married David Bartlett, a priest with the Anglican organisation United Society Partners in the Gospel, in 1966 and he was later appointed Canon Bartlett, Vicar General of Zanzibar. They returned to the UK in 1997 and David died the following year. Marion then moved to the Anglican retirement home of St Barnabas College where she died on 10 March 2018 aged 96.
