Details
Feroz Shah was a consultant general surgeon in Pakistan. He was born in Peshawar in 1927 and studied medicine at King Edward’s Medical College, Lahore. He went to England to specialise in surgery, working as a house surgeon in Croydon and a registrar at the Lambeth Hospital while he studied for the FRCS. On returning to Pakistan he became assistant professor at the Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, and, with the establishment of the Khyber Teaching Hospital, he became head of its surgery department for the next 15 years. An influential teacher, he published research on club foot, tetanus and oesophageal stricture. A devout Muslim, he was nevertheless untiring in his efforts to secure education for women in Pakistan and before his death was able to see the government establish its first medical college for women. He was also a staunch opponent of British intervention in Pakistan’s political affairs. His wife, Musarrat Shah, was an anaesthetist. They had a son and daughter. Feroz Shah died on 27 August 2005.
