He received his professional training at University College and the University of Edinburgh, and joined the Navy in 1846. He entered into the strong movement then on foot for the removal of the disadvantages under which the Medical Department of the Service was labouring, and in order the more fully to carry out his views left the Navy, where he had been Assistant Surgeon at Haslar, etc., and began to practise at Chatham, whence he removed to Rochester, where he was appointed Consulting Surgeon to St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Rochester, a post which he held until March, 1878. He died on April 27th, 1879. At the time of his death he was a Fellow of University College, London, and a Non-resident Member of the Epidemiological Society. His photograph is in the Fellows’ Album.
