Details
Clifford Joseph Ledulx Misso was a surgeon at the General Hospital, Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was born in Colombo on 14 March 1909, the son of Pius Ledulx Misso and Florence Dorothy Misso née Fernando. Several members of his family had trained as medical sub-assistants under the early British colonial administration, and one, W E Misso, was an assistant colonial surgeon in the late 19th century. Misso was educated at St Joseph's College in Colombo and passed the University of Cambridge senior examination in 1925 with first class honours and distinctions in Latin and spoken French. He went on to study medicine at the University of Ceylon and Ceylon Medical College. He gained his LMS, or his licentiate of medicine and surgery, with first class honours and the Ellison prize in histology and the gold medal in operative surgery. He began his career as an acting house officer and then medical officer at the General Hospital, Colombo. In September 1935, he became an acting surgical registrar, and subsequently a demonstrator in anatomy. In 1938 he moved to Kandy for two years, as a house officer. He then returned to Colombo and the General Hospital, as a medical officer in the genito-urinary clinic. In 1945 he became a demonstrator in the physiology department at the University of Ceylon, then a medical officer in the venereal diseases clinic and then assistant to the senior surgeon in the General Hospital, Colombo. In 1948 he took study leave and went to the UK. He gained his FRCS in 1950 and returned to the General Hospital in Colombo in December of that year as a medical officer grade one. In 1951 he was an assistant to M V P Peiris, the visiting surgeon, and from September 1951 acting visiting surgeon of the out-patients department. From December 1951 he was an assistant to A S Rajasingham, the senior visiting surgeon. In April 1953 Misso became surgeon of the out-patients department and in 1957 he was appointed surgeon at the General Hospital, Colombo. He also taught for many years at Ceylon Medical College. He retired in 1969 and from 1972 spent most of his time in Australia. Outside medicine he enjoyed reading, athletics, cricket, soccer, philately and model railways. In 1936 he married Verna. They had five children - Louis, Marie, Maurice, Marc and Monique. Predeceased by his wife in 1996, Misso died on 4 June 2007 at the age of 98.
