After the war he returned to Leeds to continue his surgical training. He then worked with R Milnes Walker, professor of surgery at Bristol. While at Bristol he gained a travelling scholarship as a research fellow in cardiac surgery at Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. In 1957 he was appointed as a consultant general surgeon at Southmead, where he developed an interest in oesophageal disease. He became a member of the Moynihan Club and was editor of the *West of England Medical Journal*. Outside medicine he skied and sailed. He was married twice.
