Details
The son of Dr Robert Fowler, who practised in Bishopsgate Street, EC, and Old Burlington Street. In 1876 he obtained the Tancred Medical Studentship (Scholarship) at Caius College, Cambridge, and in three years' time graduated in the Natural Science Tripos. In 1879 he won the Entrance Science Scholarship at Guy's Hospital; in 1880 he was Prizeman of the Guy's Physical Society and became Obstetric Resident. In 1885 he started in practice in Birmingham, and was appointed Surgeon to the Out-patient Department at the Queen's Hospital, and Examiner in Surgery in the Medical School. He left Birmingham to take up the city practice in London on the death of his father in 1886, and moved from Bishopsgate Street to 36 Finsbury Pavement, while still residing at 12 Old Burlington Street, He was appointed Surgeon to the Seamen's Hospital and Pathologist to the Central London Throat and Ear Hospital, where he worked under Lennox Browne. In a few years' time signs of the illness which ultimately proved fatal to him made their appearance. He derived small benefit from a trip to Egypt, and in 1891 migrated to Australia with his wife and two young children. He settled in Echuca, Victoria, and there spent nine years in private practice. About the year 1900 he was appointed Resident Medical Officer at the Bendigo Hospital, which had a large surgical 'turn-over', for which he was entirely responsible. As a result he became one of the leading provincial surgeons of Victoria. He won a reputation as a kindly and efficient administrator, but was forced by ill health to retire in 1912. He died at Bendigo on July 26th, 1917. He married in 1887 Alice M Wacher, of Herne, Kent, and by her had a daughter and two sons. Fowler was a member of the Worshipful Company of Dyers, of the Hunterian Society, and of the British Medical Association. Publications: "Renal Calculus," Graduation Thesis, 1885.
