Details
Son of William Garton, of St Helen's, Lancs. Studied medicine at Liverpool, London, Edinburgh, and Paris. He entered St Thomas's in 1869, was House Surgeon, House Physician, and Resident Accoucheur. At Edinburgh he was President of the Royal Medical Society. Later he was Resident Clinical Assistant at the Hospital for Consumption, Brompton. After that he practised successively at Hardshaw Street, St Helen's, at Southport, at Aughton, Ormskirk, and Liverpool Terrace, West Kensington. He removed to Hurst Lodge, Wellington Road South, Hounslow, shortly before his death on March 18th, 1907. Foster's *Alumni Oxonienses* gives: "Garton, William, only son of William of St Helen's, Lancashire, armiger. Matriculated from Brazenose College, 25th May, 1853, aged 19." He cannot, therefore, be identified with William Garton (1850-1907). No William Garton was elected a Radcliffe Travelling Fellow, as is stated in the obituary.
