Details
James Crowe Davidson Mill was a surgeon in Elizabeth, South Australia. He was born in Croydon, the son of James Mill and Rita Crowe. The family eventually emigrated to Australia, and Mill finished his education at St Peter's College, Adelaide. He started studying medicine at the University of Adelaide, but joined the Australian Army towards the end of the Second World War, serving in the Signal Corps in Darwin and northern Australia. Once he was demobilised, he went back to medical school, graduating MB BS in 1946. He then spent a year as a resident at Freemantle Hospital in Western Australia. In 1955 he travelled to the UK as a ship's surgeon on the SS *Runic*. He finally passed his FRCS in 1959, having worked in Nottingham, Leamington Spa and Warwick. He returned to Australia in 1960. He became a senior registrar at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide, and was then asked to join a new surgical practice in Elizabeth, north of Adelaide. Mill enjoyed fishing, water-skiing, diving and football. He retired to Adelaide, and died on 27 July 2010, aged 85. He was survived by his wife Kate (née Chapman), a former occupational therapist he had met in the UK, his daughter Sara and son Robert.
