Details
The second son of George Humphry; went to Tonbridge School, where he and all his six brothers were distinguished at cricket; then to Cambridge, where he was a pupil of his cousin, Sir George Murray Humphry (qv). He entered St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1850, and was House Surgeon under Sir William Lawrence. His brother, the sixth son, Arthur Humphry, died in 1867 from blood poisoning whilst acting as House Surgeon at St Bartholomew's. F A Humphry started practice at 17 Devonshire Place, Brighton, where after a few years he joined Samuel King Scott in partnership. In 1860 he was appointed Assistant Surgeon to the Sussex County Hospital, and was later Surgeon until 1891, when he became Consulting Surgeon. He also had a large practice at 28 Marine Parade, was Hon Secretary of the Brighton and Sussex Medico-Chirurgical Society, and in 1886 delivered the Address in Surgery at the Brighton Meeting of the British Medical Association, published in the *British Medical Journal* (1886, ii, 307). He retired to Warren Gate, Crowborough, and died there on December 3rd, 1906. He left a widow and large family, including four sons in the medical profession; one in the RAMC served in the South African War.
