Details
Educated at University College, London, and at Edinburgh University; practised at 36 Bootham, York; was Surgeon to the York County Hospital and Lecturer on Clinical Surgery at the York School of Medicine; Surgeon to the Friends' Retreat, York; and a Justice of the Peace for the City of York. His chief work in life was given to the British Medical Association in the earlier and more struggling years, and he was a constant attendant as a member of the Committee of Council at a time when the Association numbered hundreds as compared with subsequent thousands. About 1850 its journal was a small sheet of a few pages. On July 28th, 1869, he was elected President of the Council until August, 1872, when he became Treasurer succeeding R W Falconer, of Bath, and held that post until January, 1881, when ill health compelled him to resign. He fell into a long and painful illness; after three years of helplessness, and after removing from York to Clifton, he died on July 18th, 1892, and was buried there.
