Details
Born at Hackney, the son of John Jackson, on Nov 17th, 1804; he was educated at St Catharine's Hall, Cambridge, and University College Hospital; entered the Bengal Army as Assistant Surgeon on June 27th, 1830; was promoted Surgeon March 1st, 1847; became Presidency Surgeon, Calcutta, Physician to the Medical College Hospital, and the first appointed Professor of Medicine and Clinical Medicine in the Calcutta Medical College, 1841, besides holding other important positions. He retired from the IMS on December 31st, 1855; practised at 28 George Street, Hanover Square, then at Hendon, Middlesex, later at Frant, near Tunbridge Wells, and died at Brighton on March 31st, 1887. As Surgeon in charge of the Native Hospital at Calcutta, he was a member of the Committee appointed to inquire into the anaesthetic effects of mesmerism for the purposes of operation. Publication: *A Short Sketch of some of the Forms of Tetanus as they appear in India*, 8vo, London, 1856.
