Details
Was articled to John Merriman, of Kensington, studied at Great Windmill Street School, and in 1825 entered St George's Hospital, where in 1838 he was House Surgeon; in 1834 he was Surgeon to the Pimlico Dispensary. He lectured and demonstrated on anatomy at Kinnerton Street, lying to the west of St George's Hospital, where Henry Gray (qv), the author of the text-book on anatomy, was one of his pupils. He also lectured on medical jurisprudence. After a sharp contest he was elected in 1843 Assistant Surgeon to St George's Hospital, becoming full Surgeon in 1853. He acquired a good practice as a sound and skilful surgeon; but he seldom attended meetings of the medical societies, and contributed little to the literature of the profession. He had considerable musical talent and was popular amongst a large circle of sincerely attached friends. He also acted as Surgeon to the Asylum for the Blind and to the School for the Indigent Blind. After an illness of some months he died of kidney disease at 6 Savile Row, on April 28th, 1863. His lithograph portrait is in the College Collection, and his portrait by J Walton is in the Board Room of St George's Hospital. E C Johnson (qv) was his younger brother.
