Born on June 11th, 1795, and received his medical education at the Hunterian School, the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, Trinity College, Dublin, the University of Dublin, and St George's Hospital. In 1818 he joined the Fusilier Guards, and his distinguished service in that regiment lasted over forty years. He was also Surgeon in Ordinary to the Prince Consort. He retired as Surgeon Major. He was well known for his contributions to medical as well as general literature, was the intimate friend and fellow-student of Brodie and Lawrence, and, at the sacrifice of his own interest in high quarters, was the first to take up the cause and advocate the claims of the army surgeon. To him also the British infantry is really indebted for the abolition of the old cross-belt. At the time of his death he was a member of the British and Foreign Institute, Membre correspondante Société Royale des Sciences, Lettres et Arts d'Anvers. He had also at one time been Secretary and Librarian to the Royal Botanical Society and editor of the *Medical and Botanical Society's Transactions*. He retired from the profession owing to failing health some years before his death, and died at his residence in London in September, 1868. He was buried at Brompton Cemetery. According to Johnston's *Roll* his appointments, etc, were as follows: Assistant Surgeon, 3rd Fusilier Guards, January 1st, 1818; Surgeon to the same Regiment (afterwards the Scots Fusilier Guards), July 12th, 1827; Surgeon Major to the Scots Fusilier Guards, July 22nd, 1845. He retired on half pay on February 17th, 1854. Publications: *A Practical Treatise on Urethritis and Syphilis*; including observations on the power of the menstruous fluid and of the discharge from leucorrhoea and sores to produce urethritis; with a variety of examples, experiments, remedies and cures. A new neurological classification of the various venereal eruptions, each order illustrated by coloured plates, and exemplified by numerous cases; and a proposal of a substitute for mercury, 8vo, London, 1836.
