Details
Studied at the London Hospital and then joined the Navy. His services were as follows: Assistant Surgeon HMS *Conflict* on the West Coast of Africa, with promotion for services during a fever epidemic at Fernando Po. On HM Steamer *Phoenix* under Admiral Henderson on the coast of Spain during the First Carlist War. From 1841-1845 Surgeon HMS *Belleisle* under Sir John Kingcome on the China Station during the final operations on the Yang-tse-Kiang, for which he received a medal; the troops employed were returned to India under his supervision. From 1845-1848 Surgeon HMS *Hibernia*, flagship of Admiral Peter Richards in the Mediterranean, and in January, 1848, Surgeon to the Royal Yacht *Victoria and Albert* under Lord Adolphus Fitzclarence. He was promoted Deputy Inspector of Hospitals in July, 1854, and later was chief of the Royal Hospital, Yarmouth. He retired as Inspector-General in 1865, and died at 4 Lansdown Villas, Teignmouth, on April 1st, 1884. His photograph is in the Fellows' Album.
