Details
The eldest son of Sir Alexander Porter, at one time Lord Mayor of Manchester. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and at Victoria University, where he graduated. He was House Surgeon at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, and also at Leicester Infirmary. In 1908 he entered the London Hospital and passed the MRCS and FRCS examinations, the one directly after the other. After serving as Medical Superintendent and Surgical Registrar at the Seamen's Hospital he settled in practice at Derby in partnership with Dr Maurice Parry-Jones, his address being 48 Kedlestone Road. He became Medical Officer to the Derbyshire Children's Hospital. In the war of 1914-1918 he held a temporary Commission as Lieutenant RAMC (T), and after serving a year was promoted Captain. Whilst serving in France he was seized with illness, and died at Ruthin, North Wales, on January 25th, 1919. His name is in the College Roll of Honour. A portrait of him appeared in the *Manchester Medical Students' Gazette* (1905, v, 185). Porter is referred to as one of the foremost sons of Owens, to whom the Gazette, the Union Debating Society, its Committee, and the Students' Representative Council owed much.
