Details
Was a Surgeon in the Royal Navy, and served on HMS *Wilberforce* in the Niger Expedition of 1841, concerning which he published *Some Account of the African Remittent Fever, which occurred on board HMS Wilberforce in the River Niger* and while engaged on service on the West Coast of Africa. Nearly every European on board the *Wilberforce* was attacked by the fever, which Pritchett followed previous writers in ascribing to miasmas and the sun's heat. He dosed his patients with large amounts of calomel, opium in James's powder, and quinine; performed the duties of apothecary, nurse, and cook, as well as those of medical attendant; never undressed for nearly six weeks; and by close watching night and day combated unfavourable symptoms as they arose - as a result the mortality was unusually small. In 1843 he served on HMS *Spiteful*, and died in 1846. Publications: *Some Account of the African Remittent Fever, which occurred on HMS Wilberforce in the River Niger*, 8vo, plate, charts, etc, London, 1843, with a dedication to Sir William Burnett, MD, KCB, FRS.
