Details
The son of D R Pughe, and bore the name Pughe, or Pugh, honoured in Welsh literature. He studied at St Thomas's Hospital, and practised at Aberdovey and Bryn Awel. He served as District Medical Officer of the Machynlleth Union, Medical Officer of Health for Towyn, and Medical Officer for the Cambrian Railway; he was JP for the County of Merioneth. He was himself an accomplished Cymric scholar, and translated *The Physicians of Myddvai, etc*, for the Welsh Manuscript Society from MSS in the Libraries of Jesus College, Oxford, Llanover, and Tonn. The translation was edited by the Rev John Williams ap Ithel and published by Longman & Co in 1861. He died at Aberdovey on April 9th, 1874. In 1862 his father, wife, and only brother, a MRCS, all died within a few months of one another. One of his two sons was R N ap J Pughe (qv).
