Studied at the London Hospital from 1895, where he won the Practical Anatomy Prize, and was Prosector to the Royal College of Surgeons; he was House Surgeon to C W Mansell Moullin and to H P Dean in 1901-1902, and Ophthalmic Clinical Assistant in 1906-1907; also at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital and the Westminster Ophthalmic Hospital. He was at one time Assistant Medical Officer at Hoxton House Asylum and Assistant Surgeon at the Poplar Hospital for Accidents. He settled in practice with Robert Leslie Ridge, MB, MRCS, at New River House, Church Lane, Enfield. Immediately on the outbreak of the War, in August, 1914, he became a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and, going with it to the Defence of Antwerp, was killed prior to the entry of the Germans on October 9th, 1914. He was thus the first FRCS to fall, and as such figures on the Roll of Honour.
