Details
Born at Guildford on September 21st, 1817, and was educated at the local Grammar School. He entered as a student at University College Hospital, where he was the contemporary of Erichsen, Richard Quain, and Marshall, and there became House Surgeon to Liston. He pursued his medical studies still further in Paris, and then returned to Guildford, where he joined his father in practice at 15 Quarry Street and resided for the rest of his life. Taylor took a leading part in founding the Royal Surrey County Hospital, visiting many hospitals at home and on the Continent in order that the new building might be on the best models. In 1866, when the Hospital was opened, he was elected Senior Medical Officer, and in 1877 became Consulting Medical Officer. He was one of the Governors of Guildford Grammar School, and one of the administrative Trustees of the Poyle Charity; at the time of his death he was Consulting Surgeon to the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Surgeon to the County Constabulary and Guildford Borough Police, District Medical Officer to the Guildford Union, and Admiralty Surgeon and Agent. He held a commission as Surgeon to the 2nd Surrey Militia, and was latterly in partnership with Dr Morshead, of Guildford. He died at Harrogate on September 19th, 1896, and was buried at Guildford. He was survived by his widow, whose maiden name was also Taylor, and by a daughter.
